Odoo 20: What's New for Your Business

Odoo 20 is out. A plain-language tour of what changed in POS, inventory, finance, HR and AI, and what it means for the people who run the business.

By Tim Keyklik

Odoo 20 was released on 24 September 2026. This is the first part of our Odoo 20 series. Instead of repeating a feature list, we compared the Odoo 19 and Odoo 20 Enterprise source code directly and asked one question of each change: what does this mean for the people who run the business?

This article gives the overview. The other parts of the series go deeper, one area at a time (links at the end).

The big picture: fewer modules, more built in

The first thing that stands out is consolidation. Odoo 20 has 1,574 modules, up from 1,476 in Odoo 19. About 150 modules disappeared by name, but many of them were not dropped. They were folded into the main apps.

A few examples:

  • Batch transfers (grouping several warehouse picks into one round) are now part of Inventory itself, not a separate add-on.
  • Wishlist and product comparison on the webstore are now part of eCommerce.
  • Remote-work locations for employees are part of the core HR app.

For a business this means less to install and configure, and fewer "did we remember to turn on that module?" surprises. For an upgrade it means a module missing from the list is not necessarily a feature you lost. Your partner should check where it went before you plan a replacement.

Point of Sale: accounting that reads like invoicing

POS saw one of the largest reworks. When a cashier closes a session, Odoo 20 now records sales and refunds as ordinary customer invoices and credit notes, with each payment method settled separately. Accountants can review POS revenue the same way they review any other sales.

Restaurants and retailers also get some practical additions: serving dishes in courses, self-ordering from the customer's own phone, and in Indonesia, QRIS payments on self-order kiosks. More in part 2: Point of Sale.

Inventory and manufacturing: clearer waste, truer cost

  • Scrap is now a stock movement with a reason. You can tag why goods were thrown away and ask the system to restock them. Waste becomes something you can analyse.
  • Bills of materials can carry extra costs per unit, such as labour, energy or packaging, so product cost reflects more than raw materials.
  • Material consumption is checked on every production order. If more or less was used than planned, the team gets a warning to confirm.

Details in part 3: Inventory and Manufacturing.

Finance and purchasing: a chart of accounts that nests

Odoo 20 replaces the separate "account groups" with a true hierarchy of accounts: accounts can sit under parent accounts, the way most finance teams already think about them. There are new report types, including an executive summary and an inter-company comparison. Comparing alternative supplier quotes now has a home of its own in Purchase. See part 4: Accounting and Purchasing.

HR: one list for leave and work time, and fingerprint scanners built in

Leave types and work-entry types are now a single list, labelled "Time Types". One setting decides both how an absence is requested and how it feeds payroll. Odoo 20 also connects biometric attendance devices (including ZKTeco, a brand found in many Indonesian offices and factories) without third-party add-ons. See part 5: HR and Attendance.

AI: from assistant to agent, and a door for outside AI tools

The number of AI-related modules grew from 15 to 51. Two developments matter most for management:

  • AI agents can be triggered by automation rules. For example, "when this happens, have an AI agent handle that".
  • Odoo 20 can act as an MCP server. MCP is an open standard that lets AI assistants such as ChatGPT or Claude connect to business systems. Odoo exposes only the actions an administrator has explicitly approved.

What that means for control and risk is in part 6: AI Agents and MCP.

Other notable changes

  • Field Service was rebuilt on top of the Planning app, with maps and location features. Service companies get scheduling and dispatch in one place.
  • CRM to Project: an opportunity can now generate a project, and there is new reporting on project margins.
  • Webstore: address autocomplete, back-in-stock notifications and seven new website themes.
  • Hardware: some devices, such as serial scales, can connect directly from the browser without an IoT box, and electronic shelf labels are no longer tied to POS only.
  • Discuss: polls, call transcription, and a full phone-system (VoIP) setup.

What sits under the hood, and why management should care

Odoo 20 needs a newer technical foundation (newer versions of Python and the PostgreSQL database). If your Odoo is hosted on your own server, the upgrade may mean upgrading the server as well. Integrations and custom modules also need attention: some changes break things loudly, and others break things quietly. We cover this, including lessons from a real migration for an Indonesian restaurant group, in part 7: Planning the Upgrade.

Should you upgrade now?

A new major version is a good time to review, not necessarily to jump. A reasonable order:

  1. List the areas where Odoo 20 solves a problem you actually have (for example POS reconciliation, waste tracking or attendance).
  2. Take stock of your customisations and integrations. These drive cost and risk.
  3. Test on a copy of your database before deciding on a go-live date.
